Discover Aka-Oni Izakaya & Ramen

If you’re craving late-night ramen or a cozy spot for Japanese small plates, Aka-Oni Izakaya & Ramen at 550 Hwy 7 Unit 66, Richmond Hill, ON L4B 3Z4, Canada, is one of those places that quietly wins you over. Tucked into a busy plaza along Highway 7, it doesn’t scream for attention. Instead, it lets the food-and the steady stream of regulars-do the talking.

The first time I visited, I went in skeptical. Richmond Hill has no shortage of ramen spots and Japanese eateries, and competition is fierce. Yet within minutes of sitting down and scanning the menu, it was clear this wasn’t just another generic noodle house. The menu reads like a true izakaya lineup: rich tonkotsu ramen, spicy miso broth, crispy karaage, takoyaki, grilled skewers, and comforting rice bowls. It blends ramen bar culture with the relaxed, shareable vibe of a Japanese pub.

I ordered the tonkotsu ramen, which is often the benchmark of any serious ramen kitchen. According to the Japan External Trade Organization, authentic tonkotsu broth traditionally requires hours-sometimes over 12-of simmering pork bones to extract collagen and depth. You can taste that commitment here. The broth was creamy, layered, and savory without being overwhelmingly salty. The noodles had that ideal springy texture-what chefs call “al dente with bite”-and the chashu pork was tender enough to break apart with chopsticks. That kind of balance doesn’t happen by accident; it reflects a careful cooking process and consistency in the kitchen.

On another visit, I tried the spicy miso ramen and added a side of karaage. The miso base had complexity-earthy, slightly sweet, and warming-while the chili oil added heat without overpowering the umami. As for the karaage, it was crispy outside, juicy inside, and lightly seasoned so the chicken flavor still shone through. It reminded me of a small izakaya I once visited in Osaka, where the focus was always on technique over flash.

What makes the experience even better is how approachable everything feels. The staff are attentive without hovering, quick to explain differences between broths or suggest pairings from the drink list. Japanese beer and sake options complement the food well, reinforcing that izakaya spirit of casual dining and conversation. You’ll often see groups sharing plates, couples leaning over steaming bowls of ramen, and solo diners comfortably enjoying a quiet meal at the counter.

From a broader perspective, ramen’s popularity in Canada has surged over the past decade. Food industry reports from organizations like Restaurants Canada show increasing demand for authentic international cuisines, especially Japanese comfort food. In that landscape, maintaining quality and authenticity becomes critical. Aka-Oni manages to stand out because it doesn’t overcomplicate the concept. Instead, it focuses on solid fundamentals: properly developed broth, well-prepared toppings, and balanced flavors.

Online reviews frequently highlight consistency, which in the restaurant world is often harder to achieve than a single impressive dish. I’ve noticed the same on repeat visits. The portion sizes are generous but not excessive, and the pricing aligns well with other ramen spots in the Greater Toronto Area. While wait times can stretch during peak dinner hours-especially on weekends-that’s more a reflection of its popularity than a flaw. Planning ahead or visiting slightly earlier in the evening usually solves the issue.

The location along Highway 7 also makes it convenient. Whether you’re finishing work nearby or meeting friends for a casual night out, it’s easy to access and has ample plaza parking. That practicality adds to its appeal as a go-to neighborhood spot rather than a once-in-a-while destination.

Overall, Aka-Oni Izakaya & Ramen delivers what many places promise but few consistently achieve: authentic Japanese flavors, a comforting atmosphere, and a menu that invites you to explore beyond just one bowl of noodles. If you appreciate rich broth, well-executed small plates, and a setting that feels both lively and relaxed, this Richmond Hill gem is well worth returning to again and again.

  • Fast courteous service from knowledgeable staff who explained the dishes. Their Demon bbq steak ramen soup was over the top with a rich spicy broth. Your choice is spicy hot level 1, 2 or 3. I had #2 and it was perfect. Not too spicy and not boring flat. The tempura crispy not oily. Try their okononyaki fries. December 15.....Went back today. Tried the special tasting menu this time. Was lucky to have Janice served us. She super good at explaining the menu. Good fast, attentive. The Chef tasting menu showcased the chef's abilities and creativity. Umami, sweet, citrus, smoke essesnces accented the various offerings. Presentation was also top notch. Come try for yourself, and remember to bring a good freind or two to share the experience.

  • Had dinner there with some friends - food was very good - fresh and tasty. It is a little expensive so it is not somewhere we would go regularly. We had ordered the Oyster bomb, chef's plate, skewers, ramen, grilled octopus to try. The ramen I found disappointing though it looked great. The oyster bomb, Chef's plate and skewers were really good. I wish they had a sushi and sashimi plate as we had individuals who do not eat raw and some who would only eat raw sushi.

  • At Aka-Oni Izakaya & Ramen, the sushi rolls are excellent, and my favorite is the anago cheese. The cheese flavor is rich, and it pairs perfectly with the slightly sweet unagi sauce. After 9 PM, the late-night menu offers discounts on hand rolls, and the sashimi is very fresh — rich in flavor yet balanced nicely with the vinegared rice, so it never feels too greasy. The pistachio Basque cheesecake is the highlight among the desserts — it has a pure pistachio aroma that blends beautifully with the savory cheese, and the texture is smooth and satisfying.

  • Quality food and ambiance. Make reservation before you go. Love their Onsen Aburi Chirashi, absolutely incredible. The demon king's inferno ramen could use more heat. Highly recommended.

  • TLDR: really good, make a res, slightly more pricy but popular for a reason. Went on a date here, came in with no reservation but they had a table for an hour. Despite feeling a little rush we had a good experience. The restaurant has a cute atmosphere, and the service was good. While the food has a slightly higher price point, most items are reasonable. The sushi we ordered came out almost right away (10min) and were good portions (8 pieces each, $25~), the ramen took a little longer. The sushi was pretty good and the Ramen was great, and they do give you the free salads and ice cream at the end. I would strongly recommend making a reservation, especially for groups that are larger than two.

  • Before the pandemic, it was difficult to find a table because it was so busy at both of their locations. Now, it is our go-to, because the food quality and value cannot be beat. This location has fewer options than the Scarborough one, but the fish is the same fresh, sushi grade quality and the service is always great. We have been going to both locations for 5 years now and never had a less than perfect meal at either one. Highly recommend for best sushi, the fish is always thick cut and so fresh.

  • I’ve been to Aka-Oni Izakaya & Ramen twice and both visits were amazing. The service really stands out. The staff are genuinely nice, caring, and helpful with the menu. When we arrived, the waitress who greeted us and checked our reservation even made sure to spell my name correctly, which was a small but thoughtful touch. The atmosphere is very cool and feels authentic. There’s Japanese entertainment playing on the TVs, from sumo wrestling to Asian pop music, and the place is full of great Japanese decor. You can also see into the kitchen and watch the food being prepared, which adds to the experience. The food is on another level. I’m a big ramen fan and have tried many spots around Toronto, and nothing came close to this. The broths are rich and full of flavor, and the toppings are unique and delicious. I tried the curry shrimp, clam truffle, and black garlic pork ramen, and all were perfect. Portions are huge and great value for the price, around $18–$25 CAD. We even got free ice cream on one visit, which was a nice surprise. This place is a real gem and I’ll definitely be coming back. Highly recommended.
